By Walter Kendrick. New York: Viking. TODAY in America there are few issues that arouse more intense and emotional conflict than the free availability of pornography. Very rarely in Western history has pornography, both visual and written, been so readily available to all who want it, rich and poor alike. Our society is historically unique in the scale and intensity of its saturation with sexual imagery and its preoccupation with sexual satisfaction.
My first boyfriend was a straight kid from the Bronx. Alex—not his real name—was cerebral and boyishly handsome, but socially anxious. He was too afraid to go out with me in public, so our six-month relationship occurred entirely within my Brooklyn apartment. I tried to console Alex, but I'm not sure how much progress we made.
Straight Men Recall the First Time They Were Attracted to a Trans Woman
There is a lot of discussion about the possible effects of online pornography on children and young people and the messages pornography generates about gender, equality and sexuality. Pornography exists within a broader sociocultural context in which stereotypes about gender, sexism, sexual objectification and violence-supportive attitudes are also at play. Nearly half of children between the ages of experience regular exposure to sexual images.
The findings, presented at the American Psychological Association, suggest that the age at which men first experience pornography may influence their attitudes about women and sex. Learning theory suggests that, the more exposure a person has to a certain message, the more likely he or she is to adopt it. The men were asked about the age at which they were first exposed to pornographic material, and whether that exposure was forced, accidental or voluntary. So the effects of the extremity of the pornography, or whether it was from the internet or a magazine, was not controlled for. Richardson acknowledges that the data does not prove causation—indeed, this study cannot demonstrate that early exposure to porn leads to misogyny, and it remains possible that an unrelated variable controls both conditions.
