Anal cancer is a type of cancer that forms in tissues of the anus. The anus is the opening of the rectum to the outside of the body and at the end of the GI tract. Sometimes anal cancer causes no symptoms at all. But bleeding is often the first sign of the disease.
Anal squamous cell carcinoma
The dominant etiology is infection with human papilloma virus HPV , which is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Vaccines directed against oncogenic HPV serotypes exist, and their utility for preventing anal neoplasia is under investigation. Additional risk factors for developing SCC include HIV infection, anal receptive intercourse, smoking, and immunosuppression.
Anal cancer is a cancer which arises from the anus , the distal opening of the gastrointestinal tract. Prevention includes avoiding risk factors and HPV vaccination. Symptoms of anal cancer can include pain or pressure in the anus or rectum, a change in bowel habits, a lump near the anus, rectal bleeding, itching or discharge.
